Value betting means comparing a sportsbook’s odds against your own realistic estimate of an outcome’s probability, and only betting when the price appears to underestimate that probability. The Value Betting Strategies hub covers that underlying concept, implied probability and expected value in more depth.

This guide assumes you already understand the basic idea and focuses instead on the practical process: how to actually find, check and decide on a value bet from start to finish.

How to Find Value Bets: The Process

Finding a value bet is not about spotting big odds. It is a repeatable sequence of checks that ends in a decision – bet, or don’t.

Step 1: Understand the Market and Available Odds

Start with a market you actually understand – the settlement rules, how it behaves, and what typically moves the price. A price you can’t interpret correctly isn’t a starting point for anything.

Step 2: Estimate the True Probability

Form your own independent estimate of how likely the outcome is, based on relevant data, form or context – before looking at what the price implies. Estimating after seeing the odds tends to anchor your judgement to the bookmaker’s number instead of testing it.

Step 3: Convert the Odds Into Implied Probability

Translate the sportsbook’s price into a percentage so it can be compared directly with your estimate. For decimal odds, implied probability = 1 รท decimal odds. See Implied Probability Explained for the full breakdown across odds formats and markets.

Step 4: Compare Your Estimate With the Market

If your estimated probability is meaningfully higher than the market’s implied probability, the price may represent theoretical value. If it isn’t, there’s no edge – regardless of how attractive the odds look.

Step 5: Calculate Expected Value

Expected value (EV) weighs the potential profit against the estimated probability of losing. A positive EV means the price compensates you appropriately for the risk, based on your estimate – not that the bet is likely to win.

Step 6: Compare Prices Across Sportsbooks

The same selection can be priced differently at different sportsbooks. Taking the better of two equivalent prices increases the return without changing the underlying probability – see why odds differ across bookmakers for why this happens.

Step 7: Decide Whether the Edge Justifies a Bet

A small, uncertain edge on a market you don’t understand well is often not worth acting on. A structured process should make it easy to pass on a bet, not just easy to justify one.

Step 8: Record the Bet and Evaluate the Process Later

Log the odds taken, your probability estimate and the outcome. One bet tells you almost nothing. A recorded sample over time tells you whether the process itself holds up.

A Complete Worked Example (Hypothetical)

The numbers below are illustrative only – not live prices from any sportsbook.

Example: Working Through the Process

Market odds: 2.30 (decimal)
Implied probability: 1 รท 2.30 โ‰ˆ 43.5%
Your estimated probability: 50%
Fair odds for a 50% estimate: 1 รท 0.50 = 2.00

Since the market’s 2.30 is higher than the fair odds of 2.00, the price may represent positive theoretical value.

Expected value per $1 staked:
(0.50 ร— $1.30 profit) โˆ’ (0.50 ร— $1.00 stake) = +$0.15

This suggests a theoretical edge of roughly 15% per unit staked, if the 50% estimate is accurate. The bet can still lose – expected value describes the price, not a guaranteed outcome.

What This Process Does Not Guarantee

Estimates are not certainty

A probability estimate is a judgement, not an objective fact. Value betting does not mean the individual bet is likely to win. Positive expected value does not guarantee profit, and short-term results – a single bet or a short run of bets – do not prove whether the original estimate was correct.

When the Process Still Fails

Following these steps doesn’t remove risk. Overconfident probability estimates, poor bankroll discipline and emotional decision-making can undermine an otherwise sound process. See Why Most Value Bets Lose for the common ways this goes wrong in practice.

Tracking Decision Quality Over Time

Because any single result is unreliable evidence, comparing the price you took against the market’s final price before an event starts is one useful way to judge decision quality independently of results. See Closing Line Value (CLV) Explained for how this works.

Keep Value Betting Controlled

A calculated edge is not a reason to increase stakes beyond an affordable budget. Every sports wager can lose, including a genuine value bet. See the Responsible Betting guide for setting limits before you start.
